Since 2002, teachers and education workers in Ontario’s public high schools, elementary schools and universities have published and shared their ideas on how to ensure that public education helps our children reach their full potential. These ideas originate with teachers and education workers who have daily contact with students and are developed by seasoned educators and advocates for public education.

Over the years, many of the ideas have been adopted by Ontario’s government and real progress has been made.

“Our Students. Our Future.” is designed to encourage continued discussion of the key issues affecting the quality of public education in Ontario. Our goal is to ensure that parents, government, schools, teachers and educational workers continue to work together to make positive changes so that public education works for Ontario.

Provide every student with a broad range of learning opportunities

What needs to be done:

  • Provide all students across Ontario with access to a well-rounded curriculum with a broad range of courses that address the needs of the 21st century.
  • Eliminate fees for academics, sports and other activities that can exclude some students.
  • Develop innovative ways to maintain schools that provide a full range of services and programs in small communities.
  • Maintain access to high-quality professional and support services delivered by school board staff.
  • Focus on daily, authentic assessment and evaluation by an education professional to measure students’ genuine progress and end standardized testing.
  • Give adults greater access to high-school diploma courses, job retraining and language proficiency programs.
  • Ensure that post-secondary education facilities are adequately staffed at all levels to meet the needs of their growing student population.
